Healthy Living by Hoyt
So you’ve made the resolution to lose weight and get healthy. Now you need to start a program you can stick to. Don’t be overwhelmed. Why not just start walking? This is a great way for those of you who’ve been sedentary to get started and for the rest of us to boost our metabolism and just feel better. First of all, invest in a pedometer, a device that measures the number of steps you take. Second, get some comfortable walking shoes. Third, drink plenty of water.
Maybe you’ve heard of the 10,000 step program. For more information, check out Shape Up America and click on 10,000 steps. What I recommend is that you monitor your average steps over one to two weeks and then make it your goal to increase this by 500 steps per week, to a goal of 10,000 steps a day. Obviously, this means you’re going to have to do a lot more walking. The next time you’re at the mall, park further away so you can get in more steps. Get out with your family and walk in the neighborhood or local park. Stop using the drive thru at the bank and fast food restaurants. Park and walk! While you’re at work, use every opportunity to walk more. Take the stairs rather than the elevator.
Too many times, we try to accomplish too much, too quickly. Start slow and be consistent. Once you’re walking regularly, consider your next move. Maybe it will be logging your food, or starting a strength training program. Stop making excuses and get out there and walk! This is the only investment with guaranteed returns. What a way to start the New Year!
